The 1981 Austin Tournament was in fact the 8th Texas Open. The tournament was started by Wilma Lowry and Showboat Joe Cromley, both now deceased. The 1981 pictures were taken at Moyer's, which was renamed the Austin Cue Club before it finally closed. But the tournament continues! Now it is held at Skinny Bob's Billiards in Round Rock, TX, over the Labor Day weekend. The 2016 tournament, won by Canadian champion John Morra, was the 43rd! If you Google Texas Open 9 Ball you can find a list of all winners starting in 1974.
Here are some identifications for the photos:
#10 - in 1981 your foot didn't have to be on the floor!
#11 - yes, it's Little Al
#12 and #13 - Louie Roberts was known as St. Louie Louie
#15 and #16 - Ralph Cortez was known as SuperMex
#17 - "Country" or "Arkansas" Calvin is Calvin Harcrowe, who won the tournament in 1987 when it was held at Stroker’s in Austin
#17 - the man in yellow leaning against the pole is John Lowry, an old-time road hustler, now deceased, who was married to Wilma Lowry, manager of Moyer's who, along with Joe Cromley, started the Texas Open
#18 - black man sitting against the wall is Ray Jackson
#19 - John Lowry again
#22 - Ray Jackson behind pole
#23 - man with Afro in checked shirt is Ted Townsend, now deceased, who worked at Moyer's for years
Thanks for the memories!

Talked to "Smokin Joe" Bartlett on the phone a couple of years ago; he was living in Florida and was still hustling and entertaining... as always... lost his cell number in August when I lost my iPhone :(

I met smokey in the eighties and became friends with him. saw him quite a bit back then and he used to come to waco to shooters to visit. i have lost track of smokey over the years and if anyone knows how to get in contact with him i would appreciate the info. by the way he taught me the jump shot before the jump shot was cool and there was never anyone better in the world than smokey.
