Buddy isn't trying to use the 5 ball as a cue  ball, he is probably planning a stop shot on the five and looking at his six ball shot if the cue ball replaces the five ball.

The reason that the spectators aren't looking at the "action" in this photo and several others is that I was using a flash for these shots and none of them are actual action shots during matches.
